A glorious sunny afternoon at The Valley, a bumper crowd and three points to complete a memorable day.

Soprano, Victoria Stanyon, got things off to a cracking start with a scintillating performance ahead of kick-off.

Chris Powell was able to field his strongest team with Chris Solly and Johnnie Jackson available again. Danny Green reverted to the right and Dale Stephens played as the more advanced of the central midfield pair. Rather surprisingly, Danny Haynes was fit enough to be included on the bench. Green and Stephens were both to play prominent creative roles.

Charlton, curiously, opted to attack the North End in the opening period and started the brighter of the two sides. They had numerous chances, with two really good ones both falling to Bradley Wright-Phillips. First, an early whipped in cross was headed over from close range, then a one-on-one with Chris Day saw the leading scorer lob just over.

The Addicks went ahead four minutes after the break. A long throw on the left by Danny Hollands was headed clear by a Stevenage defender. The ball fell invitingly for Michael Morrison just outside the area. The central defender showed great technique to thunder the ball past Chris Day.

15 minutes later, Dale Stephens played Wright-Phillips in down the right. The striker fired home from an acute angle via a defender.

As Stevenage pressed forward in an effort to get back in the game, the Addicks had more time and space to stretch their opponents. Wright-Phillips was twice foiled by Day, who also had to make smart stops from Rhoys Wiggins and substitute, Danny Haynes.

The visitors huffed and puffed but failed to draw a serious save out of Hamer. The return to the shape and personnel that have done so well, was pivotal to the outcome of the match, as the hosts continued their excellent record against the top sides in the division.

The games are coming thick and fast right now and Charlton will not have much time to savour their victory. They have a visit to Chesterfield to look forward to on Tuesday evening.
